Throughout the New Literacies and Curriculum Development program, I have worked on several projects, both independently and with others, that have incorporated student choice within the classroom environment. Through these projects I was able to see how student choice affects students in multiple ways. I watched as students learned what it means to have freedom within the classroom as they were taught to choose. I learned to plan lessons that scaffolded choice, that pushed students to think critically about choices they were making, and that even gave them freedom to move within their own learning and to make choices about what they needed to learn and how they needed to learn. Join me in reviewing lessons and units written that place various levels of choice in the hands of the learner. Join me in reflecting on student choice and its impact on the learner.
