Choice in small group reading.
In ECI 543 we learned a lot about providing structures for students where they could learn fluency, decoding, and other skills to read if they were behind in these areas, while also continually being exposed to strategies that push their brains to comprehend texts that are put before them. One project we completed was a Lesson Protocol for Struggling Readers, a lesson where we planned a template for working with struggling readers and outlined how to include deep thinking within a small group. The protocol was then implemented within a tutoring format the following semester.

Below is a sample lesson plan incorporating student inquiry into the lesson plan format. Notice how the student's guiding question from the previous week was used to plan the text and actual lesson, as well as guide the lesson reflection. The student created a presentation that can be found on Google Drive answering multiple questions about heredity and genetics.
