Problem Based Learning is the buzzword within the classroom in today's learning community. Students should be engaged in innovative learning that is creative, allows collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. Learner Agency is necessary in every lesson. At the beginning of my graduate school experience the idea of this learner agency and creating lessons that allowed students to take a look at their learning and decide what they wanted to learn and even how they wanted to learn was intriguing to me. As teachers we are often offering more choice, but to what avail? How much does choice impact learning and the engagement of students within a lesson? Can choice be moved into work with striving readers and affect the way they look at reading and writing, changing their most difficult subjects and making improvements on these subjects? It is with these questions and ideas that I chose to look at the idea of student choice in relation to engagement and learning.
